Keith Nelson on Divorce: Slow and Steady Wins the Race

Divorce

D Magazine recently spoke to Keith Nelson on some of the most common mistakes that couples make as they begin the divorce process. In “The Business of Divorce,” Keith discusses the pitfalls in trying to get a divorce completed as quickly as possible, remarking that, often, the desire to complete things as quickly as possible stems from living in a difficult marriage, which, in some cases, has lasted for years.

They’ll have a ‘let’s get this done quick’ attitude and understandably so, but that is a huge tactical mistake. A good lawyer will tell a client what they need to hear, not what they want to hear. Yes, you can get a divorce in Texas in 60 days, but you probably won’t like the result.

Keith goes on to say that, for those couple with several issues that must be settled, taking the time to deal with those issues now can result in much less stress later.

High-conflict divorces with significant property issues, custody battles and lengthy evaluation of assets mean you’re not getting a cookie-cutter divorce or provision. Remember — when I’m out of your life, the judge is out of your life and the papers are signed, the problems aren’t going away without a solid divorce decree that protects you and your assets long-term.

“The Business of Divorce” appears in the November 2019 issue of D Magazine, which is available to purchase now.
